An iconic building and now, a tourist attraction of the Los Angeles area, the Walt Disney Concert Hall was designed by visionary architect Frank Gehry in 1991. The artistic hall is named after Walt Disney, after an initial donation of $50 million from Lillian Disney kick-started the project. It was completed for an estimated $274 million in 2003, with financial support of the Disney family and several other corporate and individual benefactors. The building has been embraced by locals as a symbol of the city’s oneness and charitable spirit, after they came together and fundraised for its completion when it looked like the project would fail.
Currently, the Walt Disney Concert Hall serves as the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, functioning as one of four halls that make up the Los Angeles Music Center. Together with the other three halls, the Ahamson Theater, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Mark Taper Forum, the entire LA Music Center pulls in roughly 1.3 million visitors annually.
