In 1912, the city of Los Angeles decided to open a zoo. It was called Griffith Park Zoo and it stayed opened until 1966, when it was closed and then reopened at a different place with the name of Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. It had a lot of challenges in its past. In the 90's it was badly funded and that affected the zoo's facilities, almost losing its permission to work, however, they managed to turn the things around.

Some of the locations that have been opened are the Botanical Gardens (over 15 collections, over 800 plant species, 7400 individual plants), Chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains (has chimpanzees, palm trees, artificial waterfall, boulders), Red Ape RainForest (Bornean orangutans in jungle, hibiscus, bamboo and rubber trees), Komodo Dragon Exhibit, Winnick Family Children Zoo, Entry Plaza, Children's Discovery Center, Sea Life Cliffs, Campo Gorilla Reserve (western lowland gorillas and plants which are pomegranates, palms and ferns), Elephants of Asia (Asian elephants, southeast Asian wildlife, sarus crane, Chinese water deer), and “Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles” (herps and terrestrial arthropods, poison dart frogs, Chinese giant salamanders, archerfish, Australian lung, Fly River turtles, Mangashan pitviper, west African green mamba, South American bushmaster, Madagascar radiated tortoise, Madagascar spider tortoise, desert lizards, California Desert tortoise, Gila monster, Sonoran toad, Arizona desert hairy scorpion, California kingsnake, false gharials) and Rainforest of the Americas..

In 2012, a baby infant chimpanzee has been killed by an aggressive male chimpanzee. This event disturbed some visitors who saw it and it made the zoo think about the way it lets baby chimpanzees join the others.

Also, in the late 1990's and early 2000's, there have been many escapes from the zoo by animals. A gorilla has escaped around five times and a wolf has escaped many times too in 1979. Zebras, chimps, bighorn sheep, antelopes and kangaroos are among the animal that have done this thing.

California Condor Rescue Zone, which is a place for children older than six years and it allowed them to observe condors.

World of Birds Show, a show by trained birds who are classified as endangered.

Animals & You Program, it is done at the Winnick Family Children's Zoo and it features animal presentations which are around 15 minutes.

Winnick Family Children's Zoo, a place with the name of Muriel's Ranch in the zoo offers an opportunity for the visitors to touch and feed the sheep and goats with brushes.
