The land upon which the LAX Airport now sits was known as the Bennet rancho in the 1920s. During this period, the large, flat land began to attract pioneering aviators who used it to land and take off in their early airplanes. Over time, people began to come out to the Bennet Rancho to watch these early airplanes in action. Thanks to its rising popularity, some local citizens led by the Inglewood Judge Frank D. Parent and some influential businesspeople pushed for the creation of an airport there. In July 1927, a real estate agent William W. Mines negotiated that 640 acres of the Bennet Rancho be used as an airport. It was initally called the Mines Field but in October 1928, it became the official airport of Los Angeles and the forerunner to LAX.
LAX airport is approximately the same size as 8 average size airports. Terminal 1 is just as big as Long Beach Airport. A total of 45,000 people work at the LAX. On July 4th, the pilots landing and taking off at LAX make their ascents and descents steeper. They do this so as to avoid any random fireworks events which may pop up around the airport. Moreover, if you want to watch the latest jetliners in the world take off and land, you can relax at Clutter's park in the Imperial Hill area of El Segundo. You can also spot planes at the In-N-Out burger joint on Sepulveda.
The birds on LAX airport are actually controlled by biologists. While seagulls sometimes pose a problem for planes taking off, small sparrows are the main headache. They are often chased away with guns firing blanks. In some cases, birds are trapped and relocated safely.
A total of 75 air carriers land and take off at LAX. This includes all major global airlines. To add to this number, there are 27 unique cargo only airlines serving LAX airport.
